"For inclusion in this cross-sectional study, participants had to be adults (≥18 years) with SARS-CoV-2 confirmed by PCR, with presence of ARDS determined according to the Berlin criteria and less than 72 hours of mechanical ventilation after admittance to the intensive care unit (ICU). All patients were sedated and unable to provide informed consent, which was obtained from their next of kin. The study was approved by the Regional Ethics Committee of Copenhagen (H-20023159) and the Knowledge Center for Data Review of Copenhagen (P-2020-399) and registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04354584).
