"For the purposes of this study, ITC was defined as an unexpected thyroid cancer incidentally detected by imaging methods (ultrasound, computed tomography [CT]/magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], and 18F-fludeoxyglucose [FDG] positron emission tomography [PET]/CT) or an analysis of a surgical pathology specimen. NITC was defined as thyroid cancer that had been detected due to clinical signs or symptoms (palpable thyroid lump, voice change or difficulty in swallowing, abnormality on a physical examination by a physician, and so on). This meta-analysis was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines (, ) []. The flow diagram is shown in .
