"This systematic review and meta-analysis were performed by two investigators according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines [] and a pre-published protocol (PROSPERO database, CRD 42022377753). The National Library of Medicine’s Medline, Ovid (Embase), Cochrane library, and clinicaltrial.gov were searched for randomized, observational, and retrospective clinical studies of plasma exchange for treatment of septic patients with the following search terms: “plasma exchange, plasmapheresis, sepsis, and septic shock”. In addition, we hand searched references from retrieved articles to identify other eligible clinical studies. The search period took place from 01.01.1966 to 01.11.2022 and the language of the articles was limited to English. Initially, we planned to include only TPE by centrifuge technique. However, we deviated from the registered protocol (PROSPERO database, CRD 42022377753) due to the significant number of studies that performed TPE by filtration technique, which could have a significant impact on outcomes."
